Reciprocity Agreements

For all applicants with a license in another jurisdiction​, except for FL, KY & OH, please see the "Salesperson" or "Broker" tab under "Licensing".

Review the following requirements for each reciprocity agreement to see if you qualify for a West Virginia Real Estate License through reciprocity.  Additional requirements and other important information pertaining to all reciprocal agreements is found below.​

Sales Associate

  1. Hold an active salesperson license for one (1) year prior to filing an application for license.

  2. Be affiliated with an active West Virginia licensed broker.

Broker Associate

  1. Hold an active broker associate license for two (2) years prior to filing an application for license.

  2. Be affiliated with an active West Virginia licensed broker.

Broker

  1. Hold an active broker’s license in Florida for two (2) of the last five (5) years. 

  2. May maintain an escrow/trust account in accordance with both state’s laws.

Salesperson/Affiliate Broker

  1. Must be actively licensed in Kentucky as a sales associate/affiliate broker for a minimum of one (1) year immediately preceding the submission of your reciprocal application.

  2. Complete a WVREC-approved 20-hour West Virginia Real Estate Law Course and pass the state exam. 

  3. Be affiliated with an active West Virginia licensed broker.

Principal/Designated Broker

  1. Must be actively licensed in Kentucky as a sales associate/affiliate broker for a minimum of one (1) year immediately preceding the submission of your reciprocal application.

  2. Complete a WVREC-approved 20-hour West Virginia Real Estate Law Course and pass the state exam. 

  3. Must maintain a physical place of business (not a P.O. box or virtual office) in Kentucky as well as an escrow/trust account in accordance with both state’s laws.

Salesperson

  1. Hold an ​active salesperson license for one (1) year prior to filing an application for license.

  2. Complete a WVREC-approved 20-hour West Virginia Real Estate Law Course and pass the state exam. 

  3. Be affiliated with an active West Virginia licensed broker.

Broker​

  1. Hold an active broker’s license in Ohio for two (2) of the last five (5) years. 

  2. Complete a WVREC-approved 20-hour West Virginia Real Estate Law Course and pass the state exam. 

  3. Must maintain a physical place of business (not a P.O. box or virtual office) in West Virginia as well as an escrow/trust account in accordance with both state’s laws.​



​​​​​​​​All Ohio, Kentucky, and Florida applicants seeking reciprocal license must:

  1. Submit fingerprints for a national criminal history check.

  2. Register for the West Virginia portion of the licensing exam (you will receive an approved email from the WVREC and a separate email to register for the exam).

  3. Submit an online application with all supplemental documentation. **As of February 12, 2024 we are no longer accepting paper applications**

Additional Things to Remember:

  • You must complete the national criminal history check before registering for the exam. 

  • You must submit your completed license application, supplemental documents, and fee to the Commission online within ninety (90) days of passing the exam. Failure to submit it within the timeframe will void your exam results. ​​​

  • National criminal history checks are valid for ninety (90) days. You must pass the exam and submit the application before your background check expires.
