Important Update Regarding SB 458 – Universal Licensing Act of 2025

4/16/2025

We’ve received questions regarding Senate Bill 458, the newly passed Universal Professional and Occupational Licensing Act, which goes into effect July 1, 2025.

This bill allows certain new residents of West Virginia and military spouses to apply for professional licenses without taking the full licensing examination, provided they meet specific criteria and are already licensed in another state.

However, Section (d) of the bill clearly states that licensing boards may still require applicants to pass an examination on West Virginia laws as part of their licensing process.

What this means for real estate license applicants:

The West Virginia Real Estate Commission will continue to require passage of the state law portion of the licensing exam. Therefore, this new bill does not change our current licensing procedures.

We remain committed to ensuring that all licensees are knowledgeable about West Virginia-specific real estate laws and regulations to protect the public and maintain high professional standards.
